Our outdoor expert, Graeme Creamer, spent his valuable time off exploring the Isle of Mull and managed to take some incredible images which document his time on the Hebridean island.
Work commitments lately have kept me pretty much rooted to my corner of Skye, however the first week in October saw me with a week off work and escaping to the Isle of Mull. Mull is not somewhere I’ve explored before and I loved it. With a lucky week for weather I was able to visit the island of Staffa and Fingal’s Cave; spend a day on Iona; climb the island’s only Munro, Ben More; and cover as much ground as possible to see everything I could in the short time I was there.
Visiting Staffa was a brilliant day. The geology of the place is at times mind-boggling. Fingal’s Cave is a sight to behold: a natural cathedral formed from the basalt columns that have formed the island. Wildlife was good for the time of year: a white-tailed eagle circling in the distance, fuzzy Atlantic seal pups below the cliffs, and a pod of common dolphins on the return journey to Mull playing around the boat.
But climbing Ben More was a satisfying achievement. Having had a busy work year combined with a bad summer, opportunities for getting into the mountains for me have been few and far between. My 48th Munro, and the first I have climbed in a year, it has definitely whetted my appetite to get back onto the peaks!
